Croatia

Croatia was the first country I visited when I started my sabbatical and road trips around Europe, and it holds a special place in my heart. While I think there are too many consonants in almost every Croatian word, the culture, food, and people of Croatia are beautiful.

I spent a couple of months in Croatia, road-tripping the Dalmatian Coast from Pula all the way down to Dubrovnik. Beyond the popular coastal spots like Dubrovnik and Split, I loved the Istria region, which is located in the northwest corner of the country. It’s more mountainous, famous for its wine, and the food is a unique blend of Italian and Slavic influences – try the truffle pasta!

What To Expect

  • Favorite Places: Istria, Plitvice National Park, Island of Vis, Split
  • Best Time To Visit: May, June, September, October
  • Language: Croatian, although most people will speak English.
  • Capital: Zagreb
  • Packing Tip: Bring water shoes, as all Croatian beaches are rocky.
  • ATMs will accept foreign cards and are widely available in all cities and towns.
  • Credit Cards are accepted, but it’s best to have cash (€) on you.
  • Tipping is not expected but welcome. If you get good service, round up the bill.
  • Fun Fact: The Dalmatian dog breed gets its name from the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.
